John Gardner went through several firearms to replace the Walther PPK using various pistols in his first three novels before settling on the ASP in 1984’s Role of Honour. It would become the main firearm for Bond for the rest of his time as the official James Bond author until Raymond Benson restored the Walther PPK in 1997’s Zero Minus Ten.
